Custer County is taking significant steps to address the wastewater management challenges faced by Round Mountain Water and Sanitation. During the recent Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting on April 24, 2025, officials announced a collaborative funding initiative aimed at supporting the development of a new sludge treatment system.
The county has committed $40,000 to this effort, with additional contributions expected from local entities, including $10,000 from West Cliff and a potential $10,000 from the Silver Cliff School Board. Community members have also expressed a desire to contribute, leading to the establishment of a donation process that allows for tax-deductible contributions.

This fund will ensure that all donations are tracked and used exclusively for the wastewater project. The county's finance director outlined a straightforward process for managing these funds, emphasizing transparency and accountability. Only the county commissioners will have the authority to withdraw from this fund, ensuring that the money is used solely for its intended purpose.
The initiative has already garnered support, with private donations totaling approximately $45,000 received thus far. The BOCC plans to promote the donation campaign through press releases and community outreach, encouraging residents to contribute to this vital project.
As the county moves forward, officials are optimistic that this collaborative approach will not only resolve the immediate sludge management issues but also strengthen community ties and enhance local infrastructure. The next steps will involve finalizing the donation process and continuing to engage with stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the new treatment system.
