Richfield City Council declares May Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month

At the recent City Council meeting in Richfield, a significant proclamation was made to honor Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month, celebrated throughout May. This month-long observance pays tribute to the contributions of Asian and Pacific Americans, the fastest-growing ethnic minority group in the United States.

Commissioner Tim Garvey from the Human Rights Commission presented the proclamation, highlighting the rich history and diverse culture that Asian and Pacific Americans bring to the community. He noted that May was chosen for this celebration to commemorate key historical events, including the arrival of Japanese immigrants in 1843 and the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869, largely built by Chinese laborers.

Garvey emphasized the importance of recognizing the struggles faced by Asian and Pacific Americans, including discriminatory practices such as the Chinese Exclusion Act and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. He pointed out that approximately 6.2% of Richfield's population identifies as Asian or Pacific Islander, underscoring the community's significance.

The City Council unanimously supported the proclamation, calling on residents to engage in appropriate programs and activities throughout May to honor these contributions. Garvey expressed gratitude for the council's ongoing support of human rights for all residents, regardless of their background.

This proclamation not only celebrates the heritage of Asian and Pacific Americans but also reinforces Richfield's commitment to inclusivity and recognition of diversity within the community.
