Lexington honors Frederick Douglass cheerleaders for national competition success

The Lexington Urban County Council convened on April 24, 2025, to address various agenda items, beginning with a moment of prayer led by a council member, emphasizing the virtues of hope and prudence for the council's decision-making.

Following the invocation, the council moved to approve the minutes from previous meetings held on April 15 and April 17, 2025. A motion was made and seconded, with no objections raised, leading to the swift approval of the minutes.

The meeting then transitioned to presentations, where Coach John Murphy and members of the Frederick Douglass High School cheerleading team were invited to the podium. The team was recognized for their impressive achievement of securing second place at the 2025 Universal Cheerleaders Association National High School Cheerleading Championships. Coach Murphy expressed gratitude for the recognition, highlighting the dedication and hard work of the team, who practice rigorously while balancing their academic responsibilities.

In honor of their accomplishments, Mayor Linda Gordon proclaimed April 24, 2025, as Frederick Douglass Cheerleading Day in Lexington. The proclamation acknowledged the team's consistent performance, including their previous second-place finish in 2020 and a state championship title in 2019. Coach Murphy emphasized the importance of teamwork and commitment, attributing their success to the girls' tireless efforts throughout the year.
