Hardin County implements unique misdemeanor probation monitoring system

During the recent Fiscal Court Meeting on April 8, 2025, Hardin County officials highlighted significant developments in the local justice system and child support services that directly impact the community.

One of the key topics discussed was the county's unique approach to misdemeanor probation. Hardin County remains the only county in Kentucky with a full misdemeanor probation program, which is funded by fees paid by individuals on probation rather than taxpayer dollars. This program employs four staff members who monitor compliance with court-ordered conditions such as restitution, drug treatment, and community service. This proactive approach aims to ensure accountability and support rehabilitation, reducing the burden on the court system.

The meeting also addressed the implementation of House Bill 611, which mandates that school officials confer with the county attorney regarding students who have missed more than 15 days of school. This initiative aims to tackle truancy by assessing whether parents or juveniles should face charges or if the situation stems from neglect. The county's attorneys are collaborating with school personnel to explore solutions that address the underlying social issues contributing to absenteeism, emphasizing a holistic approach to education and family support.

In addition, the child support division is undergoing a significant transition. Currently managing over 4,000 open cases, the division will shift from being housed under the Cabinet for Health and Family Services to the Attorney General's office starting July 1. This change is expected to streamline operations and introduce new resources and ideas, enhancing the effectiveness of child support enforcement in the county.
