Craven County selects Barnhill Contracting for Sudan Temple demolition project

Craven County officials have taken significant steps toward enhancing local infrastructure and financial oversight during their recent Board of Commissioners meeting on April 21, 2025. A key highlight was the approval of a construction manager at risk for the demolition of the abandoned building on the former Sudan Temple property. The board selected Barnhill Contracting Company, based in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, after a thorough evaluation process that included interviews and ratings based on their experience and project management capabilities. This decision positions Barnhill to lead the project, with negotiations for contract terms expected to follow shortly.

Commissioners also discussed the importance of a new parking deck, emphasizing its necessity for accommodating the judicial center, courthouse, and convention center. The board acknowledged the high costs associated with the project, with estimates around $25,000 per parking space, but underscored the value of maintaining downtown accessibility.

In financial matters, the board approved a contract with Thompson Price, Scott Adams and Company, PA, for the county's annual audit for fiscal year 2025. The audit fee is set at $81,500, reflecting a modest increase from the previous year. This contract will also cover services for the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport and the Craven County Tourism Development Authority.
