CUSD expands student internship program targeting high-demand career fields

The Chandler Unified School District (CUSD) Governing Board held a study session on April 23, 2025, focusing on enhancing career readiness for students through innovative educational strategies. A key discussion point was the integration of career exploration into the academic curriculum, starting as early as ninth grade. These internships span several growing fields, including culinary arts, cybersecurity, engineering, graphic design, and film and television. The expansion of internship opportunities is attributed to strong community partnerships and the proactive efforts of teachers who encourage students to pursue these experiences.

However, the board acknowledged challenges in this initiative, particularly concerning liability for students under 18 and the need for equitable access to opportunities. To address these concerns, the district is working to educate local businesses about hiring minors and is expanding remote work options to accommodate students with busy schedules. Additionally, the introduction of the M.I.C.E. Program will provide dedicated staff on each campus to support students in navigating these career pathways.
