Pearson Honor School celebrates student growth in academics with innovative rewards program

The District 58 Board of Education meeting on April 14, 2025, highlighted significant academic achievements and growth among students at Pierce Downer School. The meeting featured presentations from the student council and the PTA co-presidents, showcasing various initiatives and activities that promote a positive school environment.

A key focus of the meeting was the "PD Promise," which emphasizes the values of being respectful, responsible, and safe. This initiative is reinforced through daily announcements and classroom management systems, encouraging students to embody these principles throughout the school. The PD Promise rewards system recognizes students' efforts, with incentives such as tickets for rewards and special events like "bingo loco."

In terms of academic performance, the meeting reported promising results from the NWEA MAP assessments. In math, students improved from the 80th percentile in the fall to the 81st percentile in the winter, with 51% of students achieving in the high range. Notably, the percentage of students in the lower achievement categories decreased from 11% to 8%. In reading, while scores were slightly lower, students maintained a strong performance, moving from the 71st percentile to the 74th percentile, with a reduction in lower-performing students from 20% to 14%.

The instructional leadership team at Pierce Downer School was commended for their efforts in analyzing and improving student performance. They focused on ensuring that high-achieving students continue to grow while also addressing the needs of those facing challenges.
