Darien school board accepts new gifts for Holmes Elementary and athletic programs

During the recent Board of Education meeting on April 22, 2025, the Darien School District made significant strides in enhancing school spirit and athletic programs through community support.

One of the highlights was the acceptance of a generous gift from the Holmes Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), which will fund a new hawk mascot costume. The current costume has been deemed unsafe due to limited visibility, and the new design promises improved comfort and visibility for use at school and PTO events. The board unanimously approved this thoughtful addition, which aims to boost school spirit and engagement among students and families.

In addition to the mascot costume, the board discussed several gifts for the athletic department, primarily from the Darien Youth Lacrosse Association (DYLACS) and the Darien Booster Club. DYLACS pledged $5,000 each for the boys' and girls' lacrosse teams, earmarked for coach buses and film review tools. These funds will help cover transportation for longer trips and enhance training through video analysis, which is crucial for player development.

The Booster Club also contributed significantly, proposing gifts that include a shooting machine for the basketball teams and a new blocking sled for the football team, replacing outdated equipment. The board approved all proposed gifts, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in supporting local sports programs.

These initiatives reflect a strong commitment to fostering a vibrant school community and enhancing the educational experience for students.
