Don Mitchell, a beloved figure in Tiffin, Ohio, shared his inspiring journey at the recent City Council meeting, highlighting his deep roots and contributions to the community. Having moved to Tiffin in 1952, Mitchell recounted his first day at school, navigating the unknown with the help of local peers. “The main thing you do is ask someone your age where they’re going to school,” he recalled, emphasizing the community spirit that welcomed him as a newcomer.

Mitchell's story is not just about his early days; it also reflects a life dedicated to service and athletics. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the military, joining 15 fellow Tiffin residents in various branches, with many serving in the Air Force. His service took him to Iceland, where he met his wife, sharing a unique bond as they were both born on December 16.

In addition to his military service, Mitchell worked as a carpet installer while holding a full-time job, eventually retiring from the labor union in 1998. Post-retirement, he embraced an active lifestyle, participating in road races and cycling across the country. “I try to do 20 miles a day, every day,” he stated, showcasing his commitment to health and fitness.

The City Council recognized Mitchell's contributions and resilience, underscoring his role as a community pillar.
