West Bend explores park improvements and library community engagement strategies

West Bend City officials are making strides in community development and engagement, as highlighted in the recent Common Council meeting held on April 21, 2025. Key updates included progress on the West Bend Municipal Airport and initiatives from the Library Board aimed at enhancing community outreach.

Mike Shaw provided an update on the airport's fuel farm, noting a financial shift to acquire land for future development. The RAF RAD LLC hangar has received electrical power, a significant improvement linked to a previously approved easement. Shaw also mentioned ongoing turf repairs from winter damage and upcoming hangar inspections scheduled for May, ensuring safety and compliance at the airport.

In a separate report, the Library Board discussed its recent meeting on April 15, where they celebrated increased volunteer hours and emphasized the importance of community engagement. Vice President Wachholz led the meeting, which included financial updates and a focus on intergenerational programming, such as family fairs and STEM nights. Community Engagement Manager Cindy McDonnell highlighted efforts to connect with West Bend's growing Afghan community, addressing barriers like transportation to improve library access.

Additionally, the board is preparing for officer elections next month, encouraging community members to consider leadership roles. The next Library Board meeting is set for May 20.

In other council updates, Chief of Police assured the community of the department's commitment to continuity of operations, while newly appointed Communications Director Cali Theel is set to enhance community relations and outreach strategies.

Alderman Sparks reported on a recent meeting regarding the Wingate playground, which drew citizen interest and questions. Plans are underway for a community build day on August 9, with hopes to engage volunteers and generate excitement for the new park setup.
