Shadman Bashir addresses concerns over international students' rights and university policies

At a recent government meeting in Washington County, Utah, the focus was on the rights and support of international students, with Shadman Bashir, head of international programs, addressing concerns about freedom of speech and the responsibilities of educational institutions. Bashir emphasized the importance of balancing constitutional rights with the safety and well-being of students, stating, "We want to make sure that we look at the totality of circumstances and then make a decision which, in our opinion, may be right or wrong."

Bashir, who serves as the Primary Designated School Official (PDSO), explained his dual role in navigating both university policies and federal regulations. He highlighted the challenges faced by international students, particularly in light of recent changes affecting their status. "When this hit us, it has hit all the states, all the universities in the state of Utah and beyond," he noted, revealing that ten students were directly impacted, with nine on campus and one participating in optional practical training (OPT).

The meeting underscored the commitment to supporting international students while addressing legal and constitutional questions. Bashir invited attendees to engage in discussions about these critical issues, reinforcing the university's dedication to fostering an inclusive environment for all students.
