The Lorain County Dog Kennel is set to host a Volunteer Appreciation Day, highlighting the crucial role of volunteers in caring for abandoned and stray dogs. During the Commissioners' Board Meeting on April 25, 2025, Andy Lobenthal, the county dog warden, presented the initiative, emphasizing the impact of community involvement in animal welfare.
Lobenthal introduced Nyla, a two-month-old dog at the kennel, showcasing her friendly demeanor and potential as a pet. He encouraged residents to consider adopting from the kennel, which currently houses 32 dogs in need of homes. The kennel's volunteer group, known as the Friends of Lorain County Dog Kennel, plays an essential role in the daily care and socialization of these animals. Volunteers provide much-needed companionship and training, helping to prepare the dogs for adoption.

The Friends of Lorain County Dog Kennel, a 501(c)(3) organization, has significantly contributed to the kennel's operations through donations of food, cleaning supplies, and other essential items. Notably, the kennel has not had to purchase dog food in seven years due to the generosity of the community.
Lobenthal also announced an upcoming fundraising event, a steak fry scheduled for July 12, which raised $20,000 last year. Tickets for the event are available through the Friends of Lorain County Facebook page, further supporting the kennel's mission to find forever homes for its dogs.
This initiative not only celebrates the volunteers but also reinforces the importance of community engagement in animal welfare, encouraging residents to get involved and support local efforts to care for vulnerable animals.
