The Wheeling Community Consolidated School District 21 (CCSD21) Board of Education meeting on April 24, 2025, focused on the adoption of the new elementary math curriculum, Amplify Desmos, set to be implemented in the 2025-2026 school year. The meeting featured a detailed presentation by Carolyn Droll, the district's director of math, who outlined the extensive process undertaken to select this resource.
Droll explained that the selection process began over a year ago, involving a comprehensive review of existing math programs and resources. The team evaluated various materials from neighboring districts and major publishers, ultimately narrowing the options down to ten potential candidates. A set of review criteria was developed to assess these resources based on alignment with the district's educational philosophy, best practices in math instruction, equitable access, and overall instructional quality.

A committee of 25 staff members reviewed these options, leading to a near-unanimous recommendation for Amplify Desmos for a pilot program. Approximately 90 teachers expressed interest in participating in the pilot, which began in late February 2025.
Throughout the pilot, teachers received extensive support, including training sessions and co-planning opportunities with math specialists. The program's focus on student collaboration, problem-solving, and perseverance in tackling challenging problems was highlighted as a significant advantage over previous resources.
Droll emphasized that Desmos aligns well with the district's goals, particularly in fostering student engagement and stamina in math learning. The board is expected to vote on the approval of the new curriculum in the upcoming consent agenda, marking a significant step in enhancing math education within the district.
