Sandpoint committee addresses bear concerns with waste management and wildlife specialist proposal

The Sustainability Committee of Sandpoint convened on April 22, 2025, to address concerns regarding wildlife interactions, particularly with bears. A key discussion point was a proposal to enhance waste management by replacing existing trash receptacles with bear-proof models. The suggestion aimed to mitigate potential bear encounters, especially in areas frequented by residents and visitors.

Committee members expressed uncertainty about the extent of the bear problem within city limits, noting that most bear-related issues appear to occur outside the city, particularly in Bonner County. One member emphasized the need for statistical evidence to assess the severity of the situation before implementing changes. The committee acknowledged that while bears may not pose a significant threat within the city, they could be a concern in surrounding areas.

Additionally, the committee discussed the importance of involving wildlife specialists in managing bear interactions. It was noted that local law enforcement lacks training in wildlife management, which could lead to dangerous situations. The committee proposed that a wildlife expert be called upon during any dangerous wildlife encounters, advocating for non-lethal methods to deter bears rather than resorting to lethal force.

Another significant recommendation was to initiate a public awareness campaign discouraging residents from feeding bears, which includes avoiding birdseed and other attractants. The committee concluded that, given the lack of evidence for a bear problem within city limits, it would be appropriate to refer the concerned citizen to the county for further assistance. They agreed that a communication from the city staff would be sent to acknowledge the citizen's concerns while clarifying the committee's position on the issue.
