The Isla Vista community is set to benefit from a renewed focus on preventing sexual assault through the Raise the Bar Project, spearheaded by Standing Together to End Sexual Assault. At a recent meeting, Executive Director Elsa Granados outlined the initiative, which has received five years of funding from the California Department of Public Health.
Granados emphasized the importance of community mobilization in addressing sexual assault, particularly in the nightlife sector along State Street. The project builds on previous efforts from 2015 and 2016, when the organization launched a campaign during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This initiative trained bar owners and staff to recognize signs of vulnerability among patrons, particularly those who may have overconsumed alcohol.

Granados noted that staff often witness patrons leaving with individuals they do not know, raising concerns about the risk of sexual assault.
In addition to crisis counseling and long-term support for survivors, the organization also provides educational programs in schools and civic organizations, furthering its mission to create a safer community. The Raise the Bar Project represents a proactive step towards fostering a culture of awareness and prevention in Isla Vista, directly impacting the safety and well-being of residents and visitors alike.
As the project unfolds, community members can expect ongoing engagement and educational efforts aimed at reducing the incidence of sexual assault and supporting survivors and their loved ones. This initiative aligns with broader community goals of safety and support, reinforcing the commitment to a safer Isla Vista for all.
