Blackhawk County marks 26th anniversary prioritizing roadway worker safety

Roadway safety took center stage at the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors meeting on April 22, 2025, as officials emphasized the critical need for caution in work zones. This year marks the 26th anniversary of a national initiative aimed at protecting roadway workers, a priority that remains paramount for the county.

During the meeting, a poignant reminder was shared about the dangers faced by workers on the road. Last May, an Iowa Department of Transportation employee, Matt Dickerson, tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle in a work zone. This incident underscores the urgency of the message: motorists must slow down and remain vigilant when approaching construction areas.

Statistics reveal the severity of the issue, with 821 fatal crashes in work zones across the nation in 2020, resulting in 891 deaths, including 94 roadway workers. Local officials are urging drivers to obey traffic signs and be aware that fines for moving violations in work zones are doubled in Iowa.

In addition to roadway safety, the meeting also addressed upcoming open enrollment for employee benefits, set to begin on May 1. While no major changes to plan designs are anticipated, a HIPAA notice will require board approval.

As the meeting progressed, the board approved minutes from the previous session and prepared for a hearing on a proposed rezone, highlighting ongoing community development efforts. The discussions reflect a commitment to both public safety and the well-being of county employees.
