Crockett Police Chief outlines investigation into Economic Development Corporation misconduct

Crockett City Council has taken significant steps in addressing allegations surrounding the Crockett Economic and Industrial Development Corporation (CEIDC) following a complex investigation that began in 2021. During the recent council meeting on April 21, 2025, Police Chief provided an update on the status of the investigation, which has involved multiple agencies, including the Texas Attorney General's office and the FBI.

The investigation was initiated after a criminal complaint was filed by a city council member, based on findings from a forensic audit conducted by Axley and Road LLP. Due to the intricate nature of the allegations, the Crockett Police Department sought assistance from the Texas Rangers and later requested the Attorney General's office to take the lead on the investigation, citing the need for specialized resources.

In January 2023, the city council voted to suspend all activities of the CEIDC and directed the police department to investigate the audit findings. The Attorney General's office subsequently opened a criminal investigation, which was later handed over to the Houston County District Attorney's office for potential grand jury proceedings. However, in May 2024, the assigned prosecutor declined to present the case to a grand jury, leaving the investigation open but unresolved.

Chief emphasized the importance of impartiality in the investigation, noting that a larger agency without political affiliations would be better suited to conduct a thorough inquiry. He acknowledged the community's concerns regarding potential corruption and political pressure but maintained that the investigation's integrity was upheld by involving external agencies.

As of now, the Attorney General's office has not formally closed the case, and Chief remains available for community discussions regarding the investigation. The council expressed appreciation for the thoroughness of the process and the Chief's commitment to transparency, reinforcing the importance of accountability in local governance.
