Dodge Park leaders propose AEDs and EV chargers to enhance community safety

A proposal to enhance public safety in Sterling Heights took center stage during the April 22 Special City Council Meeting, with discussions centered around the installation of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in local parks. Council members highlighted the potential life-saving benefits of having AEDs readily available, especially in high-traffic areas like Dodge Park, which sees around 10,000 visitors on pleasant weekends. The initiative aims to provide crucial resources for emergency situations, ensuring that help is not only quick but also equipped with the necessary tools to respond effectively.

In addition to the AED discussion, the council addressed the growing need for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at City Hall. Councilman Raguse pointed out that while the city is adopting more electric vehicles, there are currently no charging facilities available for residents visiting City Hall. He proposed the installation of public charging stations to accommodate EV users, making it easier for them to attend council meetings and conduct city business.

City officials confirmed that plans for EV charging stations are already in motion, with approximately 30 charging ports set to be installed across the city, including one at City Hall. This initiative reflects the city's commitment to sustainability and supporting residents' transition to electric vehicles.

The meeting also touched on the progress of the city's fire department, with Chief Edmonds receiving praise for his leadership and the advancements made in emergency response protocols. The chief provided updates on the department's cadet program, which offers scholarships to aspiring firefighters, emphasizing the city's investment in training future emergency responders.
