Kalamazoo proclaims April 2025 as Architecture Week and Community College Month

Architecture Week and Community College Month were the highlights of the April 21, 2025, Regular Business Meeting of the Kalamazoo City Commission, showcasing the city’s commitment to education and community development.

The meeting kicked off with a proclamation declaring April 13-19 as Architecture Week. This annual celebration, recognized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Southwest Michigan chapter and the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA), aims to promote the importance of architecture in everyday life. The proclamation emphasized the role of architects in enhancing community well-being and cultural heritage. A representative from the AIA expressed gratitude for the community's support, highlighting ongoing efforts to engage youth in architecture, particularly among women and minorities.

Following this, the commission recognized April 2025 as Kalamazoo Valley Community College Month. The college has been a cornerstone of education in the area since 1966, providing accessible training and educational opportunities to approximately 9,000 students annually. The proclamation underscored the college's role in fostering economic growth and community revitalization through partnerships and innovative programs.

Lastly, the meeting addressed National Work Zone Awareness Week, running from April 21-25. The city emphasized the importance of road safety for construction workers and the public, urging residents to remain vigilant in work zones. The theme for this year, "Work zones are temporary, actions behind the wheel can last forever," aims to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving in construction areas.
