SISD celebrates student achievements at annual awards ceremony in El Paso

In a vibrant celebration of academic and artistic achievement, the Socorro Independent School District (SISD) Board of Trustees held a special meeting on April 24, 2025, honoring a remarkable array of students for their outstanding accomplishments. The auditorium buzzed with excitement as students, teachers, and families gathered to recognize the hard work and dedication of these young achievers.

The evening began with heartfelt applause for three students who received the prestigious Read 180 National Award. This accolade is reserved for those who have triumphed over learning challenges, showcasing exceptional growth and commitment to their education. Among the winners were Adi Chavez from Fuentes Middle School, Zoe Mota from Socorro High School, and Jesus Roberto from Hernando Middle School, each recognized for their impressive academic journeys.

The celebration continued with the announcement of the first-place winners of the eighth annual district-wide Math Bee. Students from various elementary schools demonstrated their mathematical prowess in a competitive environment, with notable winners including Ares Delgado from Eskom 3 Esteemed Academy and Michael Ray Crawford from O'Shea Kelleher Whole Child Academy. Their achievements highlighted the district's commitment to fostering a love for learning in mathematics.

Artistic talents were also on display as two SISD students had their artwork featured in the Texas Art Education Association's Youth Art Month exhibit at the Bullock Texas History Museum. Alanis Hernandez from S Contreras Team Academy and Joseph Mitchell from Montwood High School were celebrated for their creativity, standing out among hundreds of entries from across the state.

The evening's accolades did not stop there. SISD students also received recognition for their achievements in the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, a prestigious program celebrating creativity among teens. Notable recipients included Natalie Escalante and Isabella Silva from Montwood High School, showcasing the district's rich artistic talent.

In a historic moment for SISD athletics, the boys' varsity soccer team from America's High School was honored for advancing to the UIL Texas Class 5A Division 1 semifinals for the first time. Their impressive season, culminating in a record of 15 wins, 7 losses, and 1 tie, was a testament to their hard work and teamwork, with several players earning individual honors.

The evening concluded with a celebration of musical talent, as members of the Eastlake High School wind ensemble, trombone quartet, and saxophone quartet were recognized for their participation in the Music for All National Festival in Indianapolis. Their performance at this prestigious event underscored the district's commitment to excellence in the arts.
