Boone Transportation proposes five-year contract with live-streaming bus cameras and scholarships

A new initiative aimed at enhancing student accountability and reducing cell phone distractions in Gadsden Independent Schools is gaining traction. During the recent school board meeting, board members discussed the introduction of specialized pouches for students to securely store their cell phones during school hours. Priced at $14 each, these pouches are designed to foster a partnership between teachers and students, promoting responsibility rather than outright bans on cell phone use.

The proposal emphasizes starting with middle school students, particularly eighth graders and freshmen, to address issues related to bullying and social media. One board member expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting its potential to create a more trusting environment in classrooms. "It’s an agreement and a contract between the teacher and the student," they noted, suggesting that this approach could lead to better relationships and accountability.

In addition to the cell phone pouches, the board also reviewed a transportation contract with Boone Transportation, which has served the district for 70 years. The proposed contract for the 2025-2026 school year includes a modest increase of about 3% due to raises for bus drivers and operational costs. Notably, Boone Transportation plans to enhance safety measures by introducing live-streaming cameras on buses and providing an app for parents to track their children's bus routes.

The board is also considering adding value through scholarships and internship opportunities for high school students interested in mechanics or business administration. These initiatives aim to strengthen community ties and provide students with practical experience.
