Tree Advisory Board highlights 2025 goals and tree giveaway success in Lakewood

In a vibrant meeting at Lakewood City Hall, members of the Tree Advisory and Education Board shared their ambitious plans for enhancing the city’s green canopy during the Lakewood City Council livestream on April 21, 2025. With a mission to increase the tree canopy to 33.5% by 2035, the board emphasized the importance of community involvement in tree planting and stewardship.

Linda Granstaff, chair of the board, along with fellow members Mary Kennedy and Lisonbee Welsh, outlined their achievements from the previous year and their goals for 2025. A highlight from 2024 was the successful launch of a community canopy tree giveaway program, which saw trees distributed to residents in both spring and fall. The program, funded through city initiatives and partnerships, engaged volunteers and educated participants on tree care, resulting in a rapid sell-out of trees during both events.

As they look ahead, the board plans to double the number of trees available for giveaway in 2025, increasing from 100 to 200 trees each in spring and fall. This initiative aims to match the city’s own planting efforts, which will also see 400 trees planted in public spaces. The board is particularly focused on engaging residents in Ward 4, an area identified as having a lower tree density.

The meeting also addressed the need for better tree protection during construction projects. Concerns were raised about the impact of construction on established trees, with recommendations for improved practices to safeguard these vital community assets. The board is advocating for a community tree education fund to enhance outreach and awareness about the ecological and economic benefits of trees.

Council members expressed their appreciation for the board's efforts and discussed the importance of educating residents about tree care and the value of maintaining a diverse urban forest. The conversation highlighted the need for collaboration with landlords and property owners to encourage tree planting on private properties, especially in rental areas.

As the meeting concluded, the board’s commitment to fostering a greener Lakewood resonated with council members, who recognized the long-term benefits of investing in the city’s tree canopy.
