Residents demand preservation of parking lot amid local business expansion concerns

The Gloucester Zoning Board of Appeals convened on April 24, 2025, to address several key issues concerning local parking and business operations. The meeting focused on the implications of parking availability for residents and businesses in the area.

One of the primary concerns raised during the public testimony was the adequacy of parking spaces in relation to the needs of both residents and local businesses. A resident highlighted that the parking lot in question must remain operational to accommodate the parking needs of 10 residents living at 274, as well as over 12 employees from nearby businesses. The resident pointed out that there is an Airbnb next door with limited parking, which exacerbates the situation.

The resident argued that if the parking lot were to be removed, it would lead to a significant shortage of parking, especially with the expected influx of visitors to the businesses. The resident emphasized that parking on side streets is not a viable solution for those conducting business or for residents, asserting that both groups deserve equal consideration.

The resident concluded by suggesting that the board consider adding an upper deck to the parking lot to better accommodate outdoor seating and alleviate parking pressures for residents.

After the public testimony, the board closed the floor for additional comments and moved into a discussion phase.
