Annapolis initiates City Dock Park construction and hosts upcoming May events

As the sun peeked through the clouds, the City Council of Annapolis gathered to discuss a vibrant array of community events and significant infrastructure developments that promise to shape the city’s future. The meeting, held on April 28, 2025, highlighted the ongoing transformation of City Dock, a central hub for residents and visitors alike.

City officials expressed gratitude for the recent spring boat show, which, despite a rainy Saturday, drew enthusiastic crowds. The event served as a backdrop for discussions about the ambitious renovations underway at City Dock. The old Harbour Master Building has been demolished, paving the way for a new office that will connect to Burda's House, following the approval from the Maryland Historic Trust. This marks a significant step in the city’s commitment to preserving its historical integrity while enhancing public spaces.

The council outlined the next phases of construction, which include removing unsightly utility poles and transformers, widening sidewalks, and installing underground utility vaults. These improvements are essential for the upcoming construction of a new park that aims to provide flood protection and a beautiful public space for all. As work begins, construction fencing will be erected throughout May, and wayfinding signs will be installed to assist residents and visitors navigating the area.

In addition to infrastructure updates, the council also celebrated cultural initiatives. The fourth annual edition of "Around Each Corner," a youth poetry book, will be launched on April 30, showcasing the voices of 18 talented young poets. The event invites the community to gather and support these budding artists.

Looking ahead, the city is gearing up for May Day celebrations, where residents will display May baskets in their homes and businesses. The Garden Club of Annapolis Town will judge these baskets, adding a festive spirit to the historic downtown area.

The meeting also announced the upcoming KickGas EV event at the Annapolis Mall on May 4, featuring electric vehicle showcases and discussions with local EV owners. This event aligns with the city’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

On May 10, the rescheduled Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. parade will take place, followed by the Africa Diaspora Festival at People’s Park, celebrating the rich cultural contributions of the African diaspora. This vibrant event promises music, food, and community engagement.

As the council wrapped up, they emphasized the importance of community involvement and patience during the ongoing construction efforts.
