Santa Barbara proclaims April 2025 as Fair Housing Month

The Santa Barbara City Council has officially proclaimed April 2025 as Fair Housing Month, recognizing the ongoing need for equitable housing practices in the community. This declaration aligns with the national observance of Fair Housing Month, which commemorates the passage of the Federal Fair Housing Act in April 1968. This landmark legislation prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, national origin, disability, and familial status.

Mayor Randy Rouse emphasized the importance of this month, noting that despite existing laws, there has been a troubling rise in fair housing complaints. In 2023, California reported the highest number of complaints in the nation, accounting for one-fifth of all cases in the United States. The 2025 theme, "Fair Housing Together We Can," highlights the collective responsibility to promote and uphold fair housing practices.

Andrea Bufano, supervisor of the city’s Rental Housing Mediation Program, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the program, which has been serving the community since 1976. She noted that the program provides free mediation services to help resolve rental disputes, aiming to prevent homelessness and ensure fair treatment for all residents. Bufano expressed gratitude for the support of local fair housing advocates and encouraged community members to educate themselves about their housing rights.

The council's commitment to advancing equity in housing reflects a broader goal of fostering a community where all individuals have access to safe and affordable housing. As Fair Housing Month unfolds, city officials and advocates will continue to work together to address discrimination and promote equal housing opportunities for all Santa Barbara residents.
