BREC celebrates National Gold Medal award for park system excellence in Baton Rouge

The Louisiana Legislature meeting on April 30, 2025, highlighted significant discussions regarding the enhancement of park services and community engagement in Baton Rouge and Central. Key speakers emphasized the importance of utilizing shared services and improving outdoor recreational opportunities to attract young professionals and boost the local economy.

One resident, a BREC volunteer, raised concerns about the underutilization of shared services, particularly the Green Force volunteer program. He noted the need for better collaboration between park services to address issues such as trash management along waterways. He proposed the installation of temporary recycling and trash containers during peak usage times to prevent litter from flowing into Baton Rouge.

Another speaker, Nathaniel Clum, proudly announced that BREC had recently received the National Gold Medal Award for excellence in park and recreation management. This prestigious recognition places BREC among the top park systems in the nation, competing against major cities like Chicago and Dallas. Clum highlighted the importance of community input in shaping park services, noting that residents have consistently expressed a desire for more trails and outdoor activities beyond traditional sports.

Clum also pointed out the successful development of flagship parks in the Central area, including the Frenchtown Conservation Area, which features a new nature center and an extensive trail system. He emphasized that BREC is responsive to community needs, having recently added amenities such as a dog park and a splash pad.

The discussions underscored a collective vision for a vibrant park system that not only enhances recreational opportunities but also serves as a catalyst for attracting new residents and increasing the local tax base.
