Newark City Council updates on $2M Resource Center construction and programming plan

The City of Newark held a meeting on April 28, 2025, to discuss updates regarding the Newark Resource Center, a significant project aimed at enhancing social services access for the community. The meeting featured a presentation led by city officials, including Recreation Community Services Supervisor Jasenia Tamani, who provided insights into the center's construction and programming.

The Newark Resource Center is strategically located adjacent to the Viola Blythe Community Center and Jerry Barber Ash Street Park. This facility, previously a Head Start building, is designed to serve as a hub for local nonprofits and community organizations, addressing the barriers many residents face in accessing essential services.

The total estimated cost for the center is approximately $2 million, funded through various sources, including $600,000 from the American Rescue Plan, $1 million from the state of California, and additional community development block grant funds. Construction began following the awarding of contracts to KPA Group for architectural services and SNH Construction Inc. for construction management.

The presentation highlighted the center's design, which includes updated facilities such as bathrooms, a kitchenette, and ADA upgrades, as well as landscaping improvements and a new playground. The color palette for the building draws inspiration from a mural created by local artist Linda Patterson, which has been preserved throughout the renovation process.

The meeting concluded with a discussion on the next steps for the project and an opportunity for community members to ask questions. The Newark Resource Center is expected to play a vital role in connecting residents with necessary social services, fostering a stronger community network.
