DMV Director Kevin Shweto addresses staffing and real ID challenges in South Carolina

The South Carolina Legislative Oversight Committee convened on April 30, 2025, to discuss pressing issues within the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), led by Executive Director Kevin Shweto. Shweto, who has served as the DMV director for 15 years, reported a 25% increase in the state's population without a corresponding rise in personnel or budget. He urged the committee to consider the needs of state employees, particularly those at the DMV, who are responsible for a wide range of complex transactions governed by law.

Shweto also addressed the importance of the Real ID, warning that only 60% of South Carolinians currently possess one. He explained that without a Real ID, residents would face difficulties accessing federal buildings and traveling by air starting in July. He urged the public to prepare for potential long wait times at DMV offices as the deadline approaches.

The meeting underscored the need for legislative support to improve employee compensation and address the challenges facing the DMV, which plays a crucial role in public safety and identity verification. As the state prepares for the implementation of the Real ID Act, the committee's actions will be pivotal in ensuring that the DMV can effectively serve the growing population of South Carolina.
