City Council votes to establish school zone on Linwood Avenue for Horace Mann School

The Newton Traffic Council convened on April 10, 2025, to discuss a significant safety measure for local students. The council reviewed a proposal to designate Linwood Avenue, from Craft Street to Nevada Street, as a school zone for the Horace Mann School. This initiative aims to enhance safety for children walking to and from school, a concern echoed by community members during the meeting.

City Transportation Engineer Adrian Ayala presented the proposal, highlighting the existing conditions on Linwood Avenue, which includes a school driveway and crosswalks on nearby streets. The recommendation to establish a school zone is based on thorough assessments that confirm it meets all necessary safety warrants. If approved, this would create a second school zone for Horace Mann School, complementing the existing zone on Nevada Street.

Public comments during the meeting underscored the community's support for the initiative. Local resident Michael Webb, a parent of elementary school children, expressed his approval, emphasizing that the school zone would help ensure safer travel for students. The proposed school zone would reduce the speed limit to 20 miles per hour when children are present, further enhancing safety measures in the area.
