Farmington Public Schools enhances college readiness through authentic learning initiatives

Farmington Public Schools is making significant strides in enhancing college and career readiness for students, as highlighted during the Board of Education's regular meeting on March 11, 2025. The district is focusing on authentic learning experiences that connect students with real-world applications and experts in various fields.

One of the key initiatives discussed was the partnership with Oakland 80, which has introduced career navigators to support high school juniors and seniors. These navigators are already assisting students with college applications, including FAFSA, and are expected to enrich the district's existing career readiness programs.

The meeting also showcased the success of the district's Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, which have seen nearly 300 high school students participate in hands-on career exploration events like My Career Quest. Additionally, eighth graders are visiting CTE classrooms to better understand their options as they prepare for high school.

In terms of academic performance, the district reported promising results in literacy and mathematics. The implementation of the EL Skills Block and the Wit & Wisdom curriculum has led to improved foundational readiness in second and third graders. Notably, there has been a 34 percentile rank increase in conditional growth on the NWEA assessments from fall to winter, indicating that students are making significant progress.

The high school has also introduced six new English Language Arts courses designed to be more engaging and relevant, receiving positive feedback from students. The district is committed to continuous improvement, with plans to recommend new instructional resources for middle and high school mathematics in the coming months.
