Farmington Public Schools honors choir and promotes educational funding initiatives

Farmington Public Schools is making strides in community support and educational initiatives, as highlighted in the recent Board of Education meeting held on November 19, 2024. A poignant moment during the meeting was the acknowledgment of a student, Micah, whose family expressed gratitude for the positive impact of the school community on his life. In lieu of flowers or cards, the family requested donations to the North Farmington Choir or the Farmington Hills Education Foundation, underscoring the supportive environment fostered within the district.

The meeting also celebrated the success of the recent "Toast to Education" event, which raised funds for the Farmington Education Foundation, further demonstrating community engagement and support for local educational initiatives.

In addition to community events, the board reminded parents about the availability of free tutoring services through an online platform called Varsity Tutoring, aimed at providing academic support to all students.

A significant focus of the meeting was on the onboarding process for new board members, particularly with the election of Thomas Hull, who will join the board in January. The board has been proactive in developing onboarding materials and has already begun sharing these resources with Hull to ensure a smooth transition.

During a recent retreat, the board reviewed its mission and vision, assessed progress towards district goals, and discussed strategies for improving student achievement in literacy and math. The board is committed to measuring student growth and proficiency through a newly established dashboard, which will hold them accountable for progress year over year.

The board's self-assessment, facilitated by the Michigan Association of School Boards, revealed strong performance in several areas, while also identifying opportunities for further improvement. Upcoming meetings will address board protocols and other operational matters, ensuring that the board continues to align its resources with district priorities and build trust within the community.
