During the recent Say YES Budget Hearing held on April 29, 2025, in Syracuse, NY, community leaders unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at enhancing college access for local students. The Syracuse College Attainment Network (SCAN), a collaboration between Say YES Syracuse and the Equitable Foundation, is set to launch on June 10, 2025. This network will connect students with vital resources to support their educational journeys.
The SCAN initiative is designed to streamline the college application process for students by developing a universal application. Currently, students must navigate multiple applications to access various programs, which can be a barrier to college enrollment. The proposed universal application will allow students to select from a range of options with a single submission, simplifying the process significantly.

This financial support aims to alleviate some of the costs associated with college textbooks, further encouraging students to pursue higher education.
The meeting also highlighted positive trends in college admissions for local institutions. Syracuse University and Le Moyne College have seen an increase in acceptance rates for Say YES students, with Syracuse University admitting between 53 and 56 students this past year, up from 30 to 35 five years ago. This increase reflects improved student performance and a commitment to retaining local talent within the community.
As the SCAN network prepares for its launch, community leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration among local organizations to ensure that all students have access to the resources they need to succeed in college. The initiative represents a significant step toward fostering educational attainment and supporting the aspirations of Syracuse's youth.
