Vineland leaders secure funding to renovate family shelter for cohesive family living

In the heart of Cumberland County, a transformative initiative is taking shape at the Cumberland Family Shelter, where the focus is on providing a safe haven for families in need. During a recent government meeting, Executive Director Jill Lombardo shared insights into the shelter's evolution and its critical role in the community.

Founded in 1972, the Cumberland Family Shelter has its roots in a group of dedicated individuals who aimed to support those on the outskirts of the county. Originally a boys' school, the facility has undergone significant changes over the years, adapting to the pressing needs of the community. Lombardo, who took the helm during a challenging period marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasized the importance of creating a secure environment for families seeking refuge.

When Lombardo began her tenure in November 2020, the shelter faced numerous challenges, including outdated facilities and the need for stringent health protocols.
