Porto Independent School District honors soccer team for exceptional season achievements

The Port Arthur Independent School District (PAISD) Board of Trustees meeting on April 24 highlighted significant achievements in student athletics and introduced an innovative educational initiative aimed at gifted and talented students.

One of the most celebrated moments of the evening was the recognition of the high school boys' soccer team, which had an impressive season. Coach Chris Bradford praised his players for their hard work and dedication, noting that this year marked the first time they had a summer training program. The team’s success was attributed to their commitment and teamwork, with Bradford expressing pride in their accomplishments. The board members and community members applauded the athletes, emphasizing the importance of sports in fostering teamwork and school spirit. A special ceremony to honor the soccer team is scheduled for the following day, where highlights of their season will be showcased.

In addition to celebrating athletic achievements, the meeting introduced the "Ignite" program, a new initiative aimed at supporting gifted and talented students at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. Principal Dr. Christy Lewis outlined the program's goals, which include providing advanced academic challenges and enrichment opportunities for high-achieving students. The pilot program will initially serve 25 sixth graders and aims to foster critical thinking and creativity through differentiated instruction and project-based learning.

Dr. Lewis emphasized the importance of parental involvement in the success of the Ignite program, noting that engaged parents can significantly boost student confidence and motivation. The initiative is designed to be inclusive, ensuring that all students, including those with special needs, have access to advanced educational opportunities.

The meeting concluded with a strong sense of community pride, as board members and educators expressed their commitment to supporting both athletic and academic excellence within the district.
