Winchendon town manager retirement opens door for veteran services collaboration

In a recent Gardner Finance Committee meeting, discussions centered around a potential collaboration with Winchendon to enhance veteran services in the region. The town manager of Winchendon has announced the retirement of their veteran service director, creating an opportunity for Gardner to expand its services to include Winchendon’s veterans.

The Gardner team highlighted their successful veteran service office, which has been recognized for its effective support. With the addition of Winchendon, Gardner would not need to increase staffing levels, as they are currently operating within the required minimums. The newly appointed assistant director, who just started, will help manage the increased responsibilities.

Financially, the arrangement is projected to bring in approximately $20,000 from Winchendon, based on a formula of $2 per resident. This revenue would be part of an inter-municipal agreement that has already received approval from Winchendon’s Board of Selectmen, pending Gardner City Council's final approval.

This collaboration not only aims to provide essential services to Winchendon’s veterans but also represents a new revenue stream for Gardner, benefiting the city’s budget and enhancing community support for veterans. The committee is expected to review and vote on the agreement in the coming weeks, marking a significant step towards regional cooperation in veteran services.
