The session aimed to clarify the types of disability benefits available and the necessary procedures for accessing them, ensuring that members are well-informed about their rights and options.
The webinar highlighted two primary types of disability benefits: occupational and nonoccupational. Occupational disability applies to injuries or illnesses sustained while on the job, requiring members to file a claim with workers' compensation. Members are eligible for 75% of their final average compensation (FAC) during this period, with SERS supplementing any shortfall from workers' compensation payments. Importantly, members do not need to use sick leave for occupational disabilities, allowing them to maintain their benefits while recovering.

Members must have an approved medical leave of absence and must exhaust their sick time before qualifying for these benefits. The session emphasized that members must have at least 18 months of service to be eligible for either type of disability benefit. For nonoccupational disabilities, the benefit is capped at 50% of the FAC, and members can receive benefits for a limited duration based on their years of service.
The webinar also addressed the implications of pregnancy on disability benefits, noting that members can apply for nonoccupational disability if they are unable to work due to medical conditions related to pregnancy. However, the standard maternity leave policy allows for 12 weeks off, which may reduce the need for nonoccupational disability claims.
SERS officials stressed the importance of completing all necessary paperwork and filing claims promptly to ensure that members receive the benefits they are entitled to. They also clarified that while receiving disability benefits, members continue to accrue service credit, which is crucial for retirement planning.
