Gilbert Public Schools honors outstanding student athletes and appoints new principals

Gilbert Public Schools celebrated significant achievements and leadership changes during its board meeting on April 29, 2025. The meeting commenced with a moment of silence honoring the memory of Jude Flores, a student, and Andrea Jung, a beloved teacher who recently passed away.

A highlight of the evening was the recognition of outstanding achievements in athletics and academics. Coach Candace Gonzales of Mesquite High School received the prestigious 2025 Spirit of Cotton Award, which includes a $10,000 grant for her basketball program. This award acknowledges her dedication and impact on student athletes over her 27-year coaching career.

Highland High School's dance and cheer teams were also celebrated for their impressive performances, including state championships and national placements. The wrestling teams from Campo Verde and Desert Ridge High Schools were recognized for their competitive success, with several athletes achieving state rankings and personal milestones.

In addition to athletic achievements, the board appointed Eric Cruz as the new principal of Desert Ridge Junior High for the 2025-2026 school year, and Kristen Fleming as the principal of Augusta Ranch Elementary. Both appointees expressed gratitude and excitement for their new roles, emphasizing their commitment to fostering a supportive educational environment.
