Dallas Park and Recreation Board members highlighted a groundbreaking initiative aimed at introducing rowing to local youth during their meeting on May 1, 2025. The program, led by Patrick Hender and a team of volunteers at Bachman Lake, has made significant strides in community outreach, particularly within Dallas Independent School District (DISD) schools.
Recently, the initiative secured a competitive national grant to acquire rowing machines, which will be used to engage students in the sport. In just one week, outreach efforts reached over 100 students from various schools, including Kimball, Thomas Jefferson, and Bridal Adams, who were introduced to rowing through hands-on experiences. The program also features clinics at the Bachman Recreation Center, where students participate in activities like a 500-meter race, with incentives such as Chick-fil-A coupons for winners.

This partnership with the Dallas Rowing Club further enhances opportunities for youth, offering scholarships for continued participation in rowing activities.
Despite the positive developments, concerns were raised about budget cuts impacting the program's sustainability. A recent reduction of $400,000 in funding has prompted calls for reinvestment in youth programs, emphasizing their importance alongside services for seniors. Board members expressed the need to support initiatives that foster youth engagement and development, ensuring that the momentum built by the rowing outreach continues to thrive in the community.
