Sun City residents discuss Mountain View project's future and facility usage concerns

The Sun City RCSC Board of Directors held a special session on March 18, 2025, focusing on the future of the Mountain View project and gathering community input. Key discussions revolved around the proposed scope of the project and the importance of understanding how frequently residents would utilize the facility.

Don Shorgy, a community member, emphasized the need for a sixth question in the survey directed at residents: "How often would you use this facility?" He argued that responses from actual users should carry more weight than those from individuals who may not utilize the facility regularly. Shorgy also raised concerns about the financial implications of maintaining the current auditorium, suggesting that the high cost of deferred maintenance might warrant considering its demolition.

Another community member, Tom Swenson, highlighted the significance of the performing arts in the community, noting that thousands attend shows each year. He requested clarity on the timeline for the current building's availability, stressing the need for a solid date to aid in planning future performances. Swenson pointed out that while other activities could be relocated, the performing arts require a dedicated space, and losing the auditorium would leave a significant gap for 2-3 years.

Diane Modell, another attendee, questioned whether the survey had adequately considered the opinions of nearby residents who might be affected by noise from activities like pickleball. She expressed concern about the potential impact on those living close to the Mountain View facility.

The meeting underscored the community's desire for a thoughtful approach to the Mountain View project, balancing the needs of various user groups while considering the financial and logistical challenges ahead. The board is expected to take these discussions into account as they move forward with planning and decision-making regarding the facility's future.
