Northampton City Council highlights pride parade and upcoming community events

The Northampton City Council meeting on May 1, 2025, brought several community-focused announcements that aim to engage residents and promote local initiatives.

One of the highlights was Councilor Clemmer's announcement about a paint collection event organized by the Northampton Kiwanis Club. Scheduled for May 3, this initiative encourages residents to drop off unwanted paint at Smith Folk School from 9 AM to noon. A $5 contribution per can is requested, and only non-oil-based paints will be accepted. This effort is part of a broader strategy to reduce solid waste and promote recycling within the community.

Additionally, the council discussed the upcoming third annual Pride Parade, set to take place on the same day, starting at 11 AM from Sheldon Field. The parade will feature vendors, entertainment, and a drag show, fostering inclusivity and celebration within the community. Mayor Sherra reminded residents that parking in the Armory Street lot will be restricted, and traffic will be rerouted in the area to accommodate the event.

Councilor Perry highlighted the ongoing Arts Easy grant program, which supports local artists and projects, with applications due by May 15. He also announced a spring cleanup day hosted by the DNA on May 17, encouraging community members to participate in beautifying the area.

In other discussions, Councilor Doves, newly elected chair of the ordinance review committee, invited public input on potential ordinance changes, including a proposed weapons ban. The committee's next meeting is scheduled for May 14, providing an opportunity for residents to voice their concerns and suggestions.
