Waterbury City Council approves MOU with Sandy Hook Promise for student reporting tool

The Waterbury Board of Education held a workshop and special meeting on May 1, 2025, where key discussions focused on a new partnership with the Sandy Hook Promise Foundation. The meeting aimed to secure approval for a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will enhance student safety and support within Waterbury public schools.

The proposed MOU will provide a free online anonymous reporting tool for students in grades 6 through 12. This initiative allows students to report concerns or seek help through various platforms, including a mobile app, a website, or a 24/7 telephone line. The agreement is set to begin on July 1, 2025, and will run until June 30, 2028, at no cost to the city.

In addition to the Sandy Hook Promise initiative, the meeting also addressed an amendment to an existing agreement with Ben Bronz Academy, Woodbury, and Aspire Learning Inc., which focuses on out-of-district placements for special education students.

The discussions highlighted the Board's commitment to enhancing student welfare and educational support, reflecting ongoing efforts to address the needs of the community. Further steps will be taken to finalize the agreements and implement the new reporting tool in the upcoming academic years.
