Chandler's DEI initiatives expand community engagement and support cultural partners

Chandler's City Council has proposed a budget of over $772,000 for the fiscal year 2025-26 to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives across the community. This funding aims to create a welcoming environment for all residents and employees, focusing on equitable city practices and strengthening community partnerships.

Key components of the budget include a strategic plan initiative that allows for flexible investments in DEI programs. This funding will support various projects, such as Basecamp software to improve communication with local nonprofits and outreach efforts targeting Latino and immigrant communities. The city has also initiated a small business ambassador program, collaborating with 25 businesses to promote city resources and DEI initiatives.

To further engage residents, the city has expanded its outreach beyond social media, distributing printed posters in multiple languages that feature updates and events related to DEI. Additionally, a new young adult program in partnership with Chandler Gilbert Community College is set to launch in the fall of 2025, aimed at empowering young adults and encouraging civic involvement.

The budget also allocates resources for internal employee development, including a speaker series that has already engaged 300 employees on topics relevant to workplace diversity. A temporary DEI program specialist will manage major cultural events and maintain relationships with legacy cultural partners, ensuring that these organizations continue to connect their communities with city services.

Moreover, the budget supports over a dozen legacy partner organizations, providing increased funding to help them celebrate and educate the community while promoting civic engagement. New initiatives include a pilot event sponsorship program for emerging community events that reflect underrepresented aspects of DEI.
