Newton Fire Department enhances radio system and plans new hiring before summer

Newton City’s Public Safety and Transportation Committee meeting on May 1, 2025, highlighted significant advancements in emergency communication systems and staffing updates for the police and fire departments.

The meeting began with a report on the completion of a major radio infrastructure project that has greatly improved communication for both police and fire services. Officials noted that the new system allows for better radio coverage inside buildings, enhancing operational stability. The project, which has been in development for over six years, is now considered complete, although officials acknowledged that ongoing adjustments will be necessary to address remaining coverage gaps.

Assistant Chief Yankee provided updates on staffing, revealing that the department currently has three vacancies. Plans are in place to initiate the hiring process this month, with hopes of onboarding new personnel by early 2026. This proactive approach aims to maintain adequate staffing levels and reduce overtime costs, which have already seen an 8.64% decrease compared to the previous year.

In addition to staffing, the meeting addressed the status of fire apparatus. The long-awaited Engine 7 is expected to arrive in June, while the design for Ladder 3 has been finalized, with delivery anticipated in three years. Improvements to fire stations are also underway, including new windows at Station 1 and an upcoming heating and AC system installation at Station 2.

The committee's discussions underscored the importance of maintaining effective emergency services and the ongoing commitment to community safety through improved infrastructure and staffing strategies.
