The Mendocino County Planning Commission has approved a new recreational project aimed at enhancing access to local trails while prioritizing safety and environmental protection. The project includes the construction of a stairway, a driveway, and a parking lot designed to accommodate five vehicles, including one accessible parking space. Informational signage will also be installed at trailheads and along the trails to guide visitors.
The proposed stairway will be strategically located in an area that has already been disturbed, minimizing environmental impact. The project features a lateral trail that runs along the bluff top edge, connecting to the new stairway and extending through Haven Beach to the northern property line. A vertical trail will also link the parking lot to the lateral trail, improving access for all visitors.

Subscribe for Free Safety was a key concern during the planning process, particularly due to the historical erosion of the bluff. As a result, the existing lateral trail has been rerouted approximately 25 feet inland to reduce risks associated with the bluff's edge. This adjustment not only enhances safety but also provides a longer trail experience for hikers.
Signage will play a crucial role in ensuring visitor safety and environmental stewardship. Signs will inform the public about potential hazards, such as waves and cliffs, and will prohibit activities like biking, camping, and fires. Additionally, there will be designated areas for individuals with disabilities to access the trails, although the stairway itself will not be wheelchair accessible.
The project will not include restrooms, garbage collection, or other amenities, aligning with the remote residential land use classification and zoning district regulations. This initiative reflects the county's commitment to balancing recreational opportunities with the preservation of natural habitats and community safety. As the project moves forward, it aims to enhance the outdoor experience for residents and visitors alike while safeguarding the environment.
