Opelika City Council approves preliminary plat for Cunningham Drive townhomes development

Opelika's Planning Commission has taken a significant step towards expanding residential development with the preliminary approval of a new townhome project during their meeting on April 22, 2025. The proposed development will feature townhomes facing Cunningham Drive and a pond, with plans for internal streets and green spaces.

The project, which includes lots exceeding the minimum size requirements, is set to enhance the area while ensuring compliance with city standards. The commission has mandated that the developer install sidewalks along Cunningham Drive and the new street extension, as well as ensure all utilities are placed underground. These improvements aim to promote pedestrian safety and accessibility in the growing community.

However, the meeting was not without controversy. Local resident Taylor Britton voiced concerns on behalf of his stepmother, Lisa Brinson, who lives adjacent to the proposed development. Britton highlighted the potential impact on local wildlife and wetlands, as well as the proposed road alignment that could encroach on Brinson's property. The city officials assured that the road's design is still in development and that they are committed to minimizing any negative effects on neighboring properties.

The commission also addressed environmental concerns raised by residents, confirming that an environmental study has been conducted to assess the wetlands and streams in the area. This study will be made available to concerned residents, ensuring transparency in the development process.
