Kirkwood Community College hosts Clear Commanders Elementary Battle of the Books competition

The Clear Creek Amana Community School District hosted its third annual Elementary Battle of the Books competition on May 2, 2025, at Kirkwood Community College. The event celebrated the reading achievements of students in grades 3 to 5, who dedicated the school year to exploring a curated list of books.

John Y., the game host from Kirkwood Community College, welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of their reading efforts. He encouraged the students to applaud themselves for their hard work. The competition featured a total of 50 questions, with 25 questions designated for third-grade teams and another 25 for fourth and fifth graders. Each question was presented in a multiple-choice format, allowing team members to collaborate and select the best answer within a 30-second timeframe.

Score updates were provided after each question, allowing teams and the audience to track progress. The competition aimed to determine one winning team per grade level, with the overall district champion being the team with the highest score at the end of the event.

John Y. reminded the audience to remain quiet during the teams' discussions and encouraged a spirit of fun and camaraderie throughout the competition. As the event commenced, the excitement was palpable, with third graders taking the stage first to showcase their knowledge and teamwork.
