Sacramento Public Library honors National Volunteer Week and plans Big Day of Giving

The Sacramento Public Library Authority Board meeting on May 1, 2025, highlighted the critical role of volunteers during National Volunteer Week, celebrated from April 20 to April 26. The board recognized the immense contributions of 1,479 volunteers who collectively provided over 81,000 hours of service in 2024, supporting various library initiatives and community programs.

Devon, a representative from the Friends of the Library, emphasized the importance of volunteer hours, urging community members to log their contributions. He also announced the upcoming "Big Day of Giving," aiming to raise $85,000 for library programs such as Book First and Summer Reading. Early fundraising efforts have begun, and Devon encouraged board members to promote the initiative through their networks.

Christina Conley, the Volunteer Coordinator, expressed gratitude for the volunteers, stating they embody the spirit of the library and significantly impact the community. The meeting included a proclamation read by Community Engagement Services Manager Todd Deck, officially recognizing National Volunteer Week and celebrating the dedication of volunteers who enhance library services.

The board's discussions underscored the vital partnership between the library and its volunteers, with plans for continued engagement and support leading up to the Big Day of Giving on May 1. The next Friends meeting is scheduled for May 13, with an all-affiliates gathering on June 22, fostering community involvement and advocacy for library services.
