Henry County Schools approve Benchmark Advance reading materials and $1,500 employee bonuses

Henry County Public Schools (HCPS) is set to enhance its educational resources and support for staff following key decisions made during the recent Board Meeting on May 1, 2025. The board unanimously approved the adoption of Benchmark Advance, a high-quality reading program for grades K-5, emphasizing the importance of reading in the educational system. This decision aims to provide students with effective instructional materials that support their literacy development.

In addition to the curriculum update, the board discussed significant financial support for its employees. Pending approval from Governor Youngkin, HCPS anticipates receiving $761,161 in state funding for a one-time bonus of $1,000 for each funded instructional and support position. The board plans to increase this bonus to $1,500, benefiting all eligible employees, with payments expected by June 2025. This initiative is part of a broader effort to recognize and reward the hard work of teachers, guidance counselors, and other staff members.

The meeting also highlighted upcoming events, including graduation ceremonies for Bassett and Magna Vista High Schools, scheduled for May 23 and May 24, respectively. Furthermore, the board discussed ongoing community engagement efforts, including a successful Literacy Night at Laurel Park, which attracted hundreds of participants. The superintendent praised the positive developments at Laurel Park Middle School, where student achievement is reportedly improving, and disciplinary issues are declining.
