Rancho Mirage council approves annexation for residential development near Betty Ford Center

The Rancho Mirage City Council took a significant step towards expanding its jurisdiction during the May 1, 2025 meeting, approving the first phase of an annexation process for two parcels of land totaling approximately 10.12 acres. Located on the East Side of Vista Del Sol, adjacent to the Betty Ford Center, the proposed annexation will allow for the subdivision of the land into eight residential lots.

City officials emphasized the importance of this annexation as part of the development process, with the final step scheduled for consideration at the upcoming June 5 council meeting. The annexation is tied to a condition of approval from a previous Planning Commission decision, which mandates that the territory be incorporated into Community Facilities District (CFD) 1. This will enable the city to levy a special tax to fund additional police and fire services in the area.

The council unanimously approved a resolution to initiate the annexation proceedings, allowing for expedited approval and the scheduling of a public hearing. This move is expected to streamline the process and enhance community services in the newly annexed territory.

In addition to the annexation discussion, the council also reviewed the fiscal year 2025-2026 rent levels for the city’s age-restricted affordable housing properties. The housing authority manager outlined the annual rent recertification process, which determines rent based on 30% of a household's prior annual gross income. The council is set to approve these rent levels, which include a prescription rent credit program to assist residents with out-of-pocket medical expenses.
