The Joint Transportation, Highways & Military Affairs Committee of the Wyoming Legislature convened on May 1, 2025, to discuss significant advancements in the state's wire link communication system. A key highlight of the meeting was the impressive annual increase in usage of the wire link system, which has risen by 8 to 10% each year. Currently, approximately 550 agencies across Wyoming utilize this system, with an influx of 10 to 12 new agencies joining annually.
The committee reviewed a statewide map showcasing the latest developments, including the addition of 16 new sites that became operational in 2024. These enhancements have not only expanded coverage but also addressed existing gaps in service. Notably, two new sites are under construction, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), located in Northern Sheridan County and south of Saratoga.
The discussion also highlighted the distinction between different types of sites within the wire link system. Portable Coverage Enhancement (PCE) sites are being established near medium to large communities to improve in-building radio coverage, while core sites remain strategically placed on mountain tops to ensure mobile radio coverage for highway patrols and other users.
Local communities have also played a vital role in expanding the network, with several counties constructing their own wire link sites. These locally owned sites are integrated into the broader system and remain accessible to all users. The committee is currently working to fund maintenance contracts for these sites, emphasizing the importance of a statewide interoperable communication system.
As the meeting concluded, the committee members expressed interest in the ongoing developments and the potential for further enhancements to the wire link system, which is crucial for effective communication across Wyoming's diverse agencies.
